Following a petition submitted to the Minister of State in of Tertiary Education, the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE), Vice Chancellors Ghana, Office of the President inter alios, the National Union of Ghana Students is scheduled to have an emergency virtual meeting with respective stakeholders on the way forward of either halting the e-facility for tertiary, resolving the myriad of accessibility challenges of students or granting incentives to tertiary students in order to facilitate the usage of the e-learning system adopted in the wake of the Covid-19.
Be assured the Union goes into this crunch meeting seeking to make a strong case for students after evaluating the many challenges associated with the implementation and supervision of the e-learning platform in universities as well as the plights of needy students and loan beneficiaries.
Among the recommendations and relief sought in the petition included:
• No institution should conduct compulsory examinations or assessments on e-learning platforms, as conducting such exams and assessments will disadvantage the many students who by no fault of theirs, are unable to participate in the e-learning process. Rather, institutions can resort to the use of take-home assignments and projects for assessment.
• Government through the Ministries of Communication and Education should clearly streamline and supervise the e-learning platform directive issued to all universities as well as ensure students are given some financial and waiver cushions like bundles, bursaries among others, to continue learning even in these trying times.
• All Universities should be directed to put a hold on stringent financial requirements demanded of students before accessing various e-platforms.
• All Universities should be directed to put on hold on all financial regimens demanded of students especially those on the Student Loan Trust Fund ( SLTF) until they get their allocation for the second semester.
• Government should include incentives for students as it plans to outdoor roadmap to allocate resources made to the Covid-19 National Trust Fund which has received some support over the past week.
• Grant loan waivers for needy students who access the SLTF as indeed, these times are not ordinary times
• Show concern to help students who are needy in these times by supporting the NUGS Food & Goods Bank to meet the overwhelming demands by students in the past weeks and in a face of a possible extension in lockdown. The NUGS Food and Goods Bank has successfully distributed over GHC20,000 worth of food and grocery items to over 500 students and households in Accra and Kumasi as well as given out about GHC2,000 worth of recharge call cards to about 800 students who successfully went through verification online, for the past 3 weeks.
Therefore, the Union under president Hyde wishes to assure all students that their interest and right to education will not be compromised in these times of digital divide and pandemic.
We hereby urge all SRCs, blocs, affiliated and sister Unions, to remain calm as we shall communicate as soon as possible the outcome of our scheduled meeting tomorrow, Friday, 17th April,2020, barring all hitches.
